Introduction:

Review:
(v.3) “Blessing in the heavenly places”(the unseen world “where our Lord Dwells) in Christ.
(v.4) “In Him” We were chose—Pluck out of this world system
(v.7) “In Him” we have redeem off the slave market of sin
(v.11) “In Him” we have obtained an inheritance
(v.13) “In Him” we were sealed in Him by the HS a downpayment which is the guarantee of our future redemption.
Consistent Themes: “In Him” used in (v.3, 4, 7, 11) and “to the praise of his Glory” used in (v.6,12,14) the “In Him” preposition he tells us what are gifts are from Christ and the prepositional phrase “to the praise of his Glory” tells us the reason we have these gifts in Christ.
Then: Paul transition from Heaven to Earth to give the believers a practical lesson about these blessings.
Ephesians 1:15–16 NASB95
15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers;
Ephesians 3:15-
eph 1:15-
Ephesians 3:15–16 NASB95
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
(v.15) “For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among and your Love for the Saints.” Paul has heard through the Grapevine a most likely people he has sent to check up on them that they are practicing “the Great Commandments” Love the Lord & Lord your Neighbor. Paul exhorts or encourages their Faith in the Lord Jesus and their love for all the saints. This church is going the right direction.
6-Back to the initial first clause “For this reason I too” What reason? because of your Faith in God(Right Doctrine) and Love for the Saints(Right Practice) (v.16) “do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers” Paul says I can’t stop talking about yall during my prayer time. Your faith and love has me thanking God when I get on my knees. He says I can’t help but praise and give thanks.
-Paul then goes from Thanksgiving in his prayer to Supplication(Request). He tells the believers of Ephesus what he prays for them.

I. Paul 1st Prayer Request

I.
Ephesians 3:17 NASB95
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
Ephesians 1:17–18 NASB95
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 1:17–18 NASB95
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
Ephesians 3:17–18 NASB95
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
(v.16b) “While making mention of you in my prayers” What a wonderful blessing this is to go into Paul prayer room and see what burdens his heart, and those things that he desired most for those he was Shepherding. This is Paul giving us insight into the heart of God. It let’s us know a little bit why we go through what we go through and the intent of the heart of God.

(v.17) 1st Prayer request: Paul prayers to the “The Father” give them a spirit of

a. Wisdom-applied knowledge—This is the sense to apply all the things that you have learned about God at your own spiritual maturity. Paul is saying “Father give them a spirit to apply the knowledge that they know about you”
b. Revelation—This word means “to reveal. Revelation, uncovering, unveiling, disclosure” This carries the idea of a growing relationship where one party reveals more about themselves as the other party draws closer. Paul is praying “Father as they apply the knowledge they have of you, reveal more of yourself to them.” By Analogy: Friendship, Courting, Then Marriage. Each stage is a different level of intimacy based on Trust, Honesty, and Faithfulness.
to reveal. Revelation, uncovering, unveiling, disclosure
(v.17) “in the knowledge of Him” Paul first priority for the saints is that they “Grow Deeper in intimacy with the Father!!” Now we have to do a little work on this word “Knowledge” in greek work is Epignosis- Meaning an accurate, thorough and full knowledge of something. It involves the active participation of the learner. It’s the kind of learning that comes from learning and applying. This means that we are to deeply study the Triune God and then immediately apply those truths to our daily lives.
-Paul understood that the knowledge of God is the foundational principle for any Christian. So we can make some absolute statements based on this prayer from Paul:
Paul understood that the knowledge of God is the foundational principle for any Christian. So we can make some absolute statements based on this prayer from Paul:
Application
1. The Father, The Son, The Spirit, and all the Holy Apostles desire that believers of Christ would come to a deep, and abiding knowledge of the Lord by Learning and Applying.
2. The HS is pointing you in the direction of this knowledge, which leads to wisdom, and it leads to the self revelator revealing himself more deeply to you.
Quote
God is eager to talk about your purpose and future and the plans he has in store for you. But revealing his specific will to you is often contingent on how well you're responding to his general will already made known in Scripture. #ReadTheBible

II. Paul 2nd prayer Request

eph 1:
Ephesians 1:18–19 NASB95
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
(v.18) “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened” Paul is using metaphorical language to help us truly grasp his request. He uses anthroporphimic language-your heart does not have eyes. When the bible uses heart like this it is talking about deepest innermost parts of a man. Paul is asking that you may be “enlightened”meaning to reveal or make known. Then he tells us those things that he wants use to be enlightened about.

A. Called by God for a Purpose(Past)

(v.18) “so that you will know what is the hope of his calling” Before we jump into this phrase let’s define this word “know”
a. Ginosko-acquiring of knowledge through study; Learning how to cook, fix a car
b. Oida—Instinctual Knowledge; a baby breast feeding, when a person puts their hands out to brace for a fall. Pushing someone away when they get into your personal space.
-(v.18) In this text the word “Oida” is used. Meaning Lord give us instinctual knowledge of the “hope” of our call. In the western world when we use the word “hope” it carries the same idea as “chance” something that may or may not happen. But when the NT writer’s use that term as it relates to our relationship with Christ. It is a settled fact, it is a foregone conclusion. God has spoken “so let the church say amen”
-(v.18) “so that you will know what is the hope of his calling” Paul wants us to instinctually be aware that we have a settled salvation and adoption in Christ. We are too reflect in the settled fact of our redemption. Like breathing this reflection should be second nature to us.

B.Pray that they will Trust my Plan(Future)

(v.18) “what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints” The Church/Bride is the Father’s wedding gift to the Son. It is the Son’s inheritance. Paul tells us that there are tremendous benefits to being the wedding gift for the Son. Gift are meant to be enjoyed and used. Often in antiquity when a dowry was paid for a bride, livestock was promised as a part of the deal. It was the responsibility of the owner to make sure that when the wedding happened the animals that he promised were; Protected, Provided for, and Mature. Since we are an inheritance to Jesus the Father has promised that we would be protected, provided for, and that we would be mature when we are presented to the Son as a bride without spot nor blemish.
Philippians 1:6 NASB95
6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

C. Pray that they will be able to comprehend the Power residing within them(Present)

Ephesians 1:19 NASB95
19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
(v.19) “and what is the surpassing greatness of His power towards us who believe” This is the third thing that Paul wants us to instinctually know. So much in so that we don’t even think about it anymore “we just know”. That God has not given us a lesser power from one of the angels, nor has he given us a temporary power like he did Saints in the OT. This is a permanent explosive power given for the purpose of finishing whatever course God has design for you to run.
(v.19) “toward us who believe” notice the text this a power that only believers have.
a. Power— “Duna” to be able; also defined as “achieving power” We get our word “Dynamite” from this word, but the biblical writers did not have “Dynamite” in mind when they used this word. Paul simply meant that you have a power within you “that is able to complete supernatural task” This is not willpower(which unbelievers have as well) It is a power the reaches into the heavenly places the unseen world and does damage to the Kingdom of Satan.
Unbelievers also have this power in them as well and it is Supernatural but it comes from a different place---
-This is an overcoming power. This is a power that says there is nothing that I cannot accomplish that is within the will of God for my life.
(v.19) “These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead” These(Calling, Inheritance and Power) all converged at the Resurrection.
-Jesus was called to die for the sins of humanity and be raised to conquer death(past)
(Help)
Psalm 16:10 NASB95
10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
(v.10) This is promise not to leave him(Jesus) in the grave
-Jesus was motivated by his future inheritance a return back to the father in glory after having accomplished his will(future)
(help)
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
(v.2) “who for the joy set before him” Jesus got through the pain of the cross by keeping his eyes on his future inheritance & glory.
-Jesus lived his life with a “God is able” mindset. He was more than a conqueror.
John 2:19 NASB95
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
(v.19) Jesus was not talking about a physical temple but his body. Jesus says housed within me is resurrection power. You can’t keep me down.
Ephesians 1:20 NASB95
20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
eph 1:20
(v.20) “when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places” Notice where it says that Jesus sat down at:
(v.20) and seated Him(Jesus) at His(Father) right hand in the heavenly places. In antiquity the prince always sat at the right hand of the King. The right hand was considered the hand of Rule & Authority. Jesus sat down at the right hand of God. Once again The Father does not have hands. This is communicating that the Son’s atoning work so he Sat down. The Son Sits in seat of judgement “in the heavenly places” the Supernatural Abode or the invisible abode of God. This is the second time Paul has used this phrase in Chapter 1. He also used this term in (v.3). Interpretively Paul is subtlety attacking the Polytheistic and Mystical teachings of the people in Ephesus. He is explaining the Supernatural world to these new believers. Paul is using metaphorical imagery to take us from the seen world to the unseen world.
Where is Jesus Christ place now in comparison to all other Supernatural Beings?
Ephesians 1:21–23 NASB95
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
(v.21) Paul is about to tell us about the extent of Jesus Authority(Exousia) Power. He starts off telling us: “far above” we would say “its not even close” “it’s not a worthy comparison” then Paul gives us a list:
(v.21) “all rule and authority and power and dominion” All three of these are nouns. Nouns are person, places or things usually we would put these nouns into the things category. But in this case they are describing Persons. Let’s do a little study so that we can ascertain what Paul is talking about.
(Help)
Ephesians 2:2 NASB95
2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
(v.2) “according to the prince(archon)—chief, ruler or magistrate of the power(exousia) of the air” This phrase describes someone(Satan) as the prince, magistrate, or chief over power(exousia; supernatural beings) of the air.
(Help)
Ephesians 3:10 NASB95
10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 3:9–10 NASB95
9 and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; 10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.
eph
(v.9-10) God wanted his wisdom to made known through(using the church) to the rulers(arche) and authorities(exousia) in the heavenly places(the unseen world). This tells us that God is using the seen church to teach and astound the unseen (rulers) and authorities. Logically only persons can be taught and appreciate wisdom.
(v.10)
Ephesians 6:12 NASB95
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
(v.12) Our struggle is not against the seen world of people, but against the unseen: rulers, powers, and world forces of this darkness.
Ephesians 1:20 NASB95
20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
Ephesians 1:21–23 NASB95
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
eph 1;2
(v.21) This list includes Supernatural Holy Beings(Angels) and Supernatural Wicked beings(Demons) including their Chief(Satan) The first word “Rule” the exalted one, or chief one. This list is in descending order of rank. In his death and resurrection “the Father” has exalted Jesus “far above” all the Generals, Lt Generals, Major Generals, Colonels, LT Colonels, Captains, 2nd LT, Sergeants and soldiers.
-(v.21) Like the military Angels and Demons are structured according to rank based on their authority and power. This tells me that there is a hierarchal structure in the supernatural world. And The Father just told me who sits at the Apex of that authority and that is Jesus the Christ.
-(v.21) “and every name that is named” Every title; King, President, Secretary of State, magistrate, Visor, Ceaser, Zeus, Artemis, Isis, Hermes, Hercules, Aphrodite. Christ is “far above” all of these names. He is not a chief among equals “He sits all by himself” without equal. Listen to the Writer of Chronicles describe him:
(help)
1 Chronicles 16:23–31 NASB95
23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. 24 Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. 25 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He also is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the Lord made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty are before Him, Strength and joy are in His place. 28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come before Him; Worship the Lord in holy array. 30 Tremble before Him, all the earth; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved. 31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; And let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
1 Chronicles 16:23-
Listen to God speak about himself:
Isaiah 42:5–8 NASB95
5 Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it And spirit to those who walk in it, 6 “I am the Lord, I have called You in righteousness, I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, 7 To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. 8 “I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images.
(v.8) The Lord(Yahweh) seems a little mad....The Lord is saying “you better some respeck” on my name!!!! “I will not give my glory to another” it is mine alone.
5 out of the 7 times the NT speaks of these rulers, authorities and powers is used in the book of Ephesians, now Why we Paul speak so often about the Supernatural strata of the unseen world to the believers at Ephesus?
Observation
5 out of the 7 times the NT speaks of these rulers, authorities and powers is used in the book of Ephesians, now Why would Paul speak so often about the Supernatural strata of the unseen world to the believers at Ephesus?
-Paul is methodically destroying the foundations of a polytheistic system of worship that is rooted in the worship of demons:
(help)
Deuteronomy 32:16–18 NASB95
16 “They made Him jealous with strange gods; With abominations they provoked Him to anger. 17 “They sacrificed to demons who were not God, To gods whom they have not known, New gods who came lately, Whom your fathers did not dread. 18 “You neglected the Rock who begot you, And forgot the God who gave you birth.
(v.16-17) Summary: Make no mistake about it some of these idols where able to produce supernatural events, but those events where not from God, but from Satan himself. You remember the magicians of Egypt where able to make their staffs turn to snakes. Don’t forget Satan has power as well and he is able to produce supernatural events.
Eph 1:22-
-I don’t doubt for a minute that some of the magicians of Ephesus had produce some supernatural events that caused people to worship stones, and wood carvings.
-Paul didn’t spend arguing about the truthfulness of those experiences he basically says that this Man Jesus who was crucified, and then Resurrected three days after is “far above” all the gods of your system. So rather than worship one god(for war), one god(fertility) one God for(vegetation), one God for(luck), One God for(hunting) it would be better to put all your effort into serving the One God who is the embodiment of things. He is the God of war, He is the God of provision, He is the God that brings Life, He the God that brings healing, He is the God that brings peace, He is the God the produces righteousness, he is El Elyon(the most High God) , He is El Shaddai the Almighty God. He is Yahweh the “I am who I am God” if you have him you don’t need all those others Gods. He is enough.
Ephesians 1:22–23 NASB95
22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
(v.22) His Father has made things all bow(subject) to him!! every knee bows at his name.
(v.22) His Father has made things all bow(subject) to him!! every knee bows at his name.
-Then Paul goes from the unseen world to the seen world- He gets practical.
(v.22) “and gave Him as head over all things to the church” Paul is telling this local church take heart, don’t worry, and don’t afraid. Because that person who has been endowed with a name that is above every name is also the General of our army, He is the Shepherd of our church, a is the CEO of our company, He is the Coach of our Team, and he is the personal Father of every believer in this church; meaning that if you want to mess with me you got to come through my Daddy(Who’s name is wonderful), and my Brother(Who’s name is the Truth you might remember him as Jesus), and the HS(Who’s name is the comforter) and He lives with me. He is the one who tells me to go to bed while he stays up and keeps watch. Oh I forgot to tell you about the billions of Holy Angels that are called ministering spirits sent to take care of the needs of the Saints!!!
Conclusion
21They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
21They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
22They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
“23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
